The Month of April is National Stress Awareness Month which brings attention to the negative impact of stress. Stress awareness is important because managing stress is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. And knowing how to manage your stress can improve your mental and physical health. The awareness has been held in April since 1992 to raise awareness of the causes and cures for our modern-day stress. Some signs of stress are sleep problems, muscle aches and headaches, chest pain and high blood pressure. Stress is a natural human response and can take place from frustration, life changes, conflict, lack of control, and uncertainty. There are three main types of stress. Acute stress. A short-term stress that goes away quickly. Like when you slam on your brakes. And Chronic stress. This stress is the type that lasts for longer periods of time. Which is mostly work related. And episodic acute stress. When someone experiences acute stress frequently. You may feel this type of stress when you are always under a lot of pressure or feel that things are always going wrong.
Stress was first discovered in July of 1936 by Hans Selye (a pioneering Hungarian Canadian endocrinologist who scientifically worked on the hypothetical non-specific response of an organism to stressors) where he first incorporated the term into the medical lexicon to describe the “nonspecific response of the body to any demand”. He also wrote the Stress is the spice of life.”
