On Monday night, the students in the various music programs at Sultan High School gathered in the band room in anticipation. Not even 20 feet away, plenty of people invested in the community collected in the commons, prepared to appreciate art.
Choir started with a great selection of Halloween songs, that shocked the crowd with their wide range, various skills, and the ability to put on a good show. “I was amazed by their talent,” said senior Gavin Christensen, “I wish I could sing with that kind of talent.” As they stood in front of the audience and sang, the band set up behind them, front row seats!
After choir was the wind ensemble. After many weeks of practicing, the band was nervous. For some, it was their first time performing in front of a crowd, a handful of students even just learned their instrument this school year. “I had a great time listening to the band, I was pleasantly surprised.” said Monroe senior, and former sultan student, Erick Vazquez.
After the band was show choir, who performed a wonderful rock and roll set for the crowd, backed by Gavin Christensen on bass, Sarah Gillespie on drums, and Jacob Gardner on guitar. The group sang, danced, and really set a light mood for the evening. Sultan High really puts the show in show choir.
To end the night was a new project of the bands this year, the rock ensemble. Brass, woodwinds, strings, you name it, it has a place in this band. They closed the night with fun songs like Hawaii Five-0, Any Way you Want it, At the Hop, and Livin on a Prayer.
I’m lucky enough to live in a town that’s so supportive of the local music, school related or not. The first concert of the year was certainly a hit, with many more to come!
